Being Merry by Meka James
Did not finish book. Stopped at 36%.
I hate Lennox (the one who owns the house). She’s not just grumpy, she’s mean. She flat out doesn’t acknowledge any of the nice things Noelle does for her, literally doesn’t even say thank you. She just games and shouts into her headset and makes Noelle feel like dirt for existing. Noelle is basically acting like a live-in maid, making Lennox coffee, cleaning, making her meals, keeping groceries stocked… and Lennox acts like she doesn’t exist. I read in other reviews that people didn’t like her in the beginning but that her apology game is strong, but at this moment in my life I don’t have space to read about mean characters, there’s enough mean people irl. I don’t have the patience’s or mental space to get to the apology scene and also I’m not sure what she could say to make me like her.
Also, I wasn’t comfortable with the sexualizing they do to each other. They both like really ogle the other, and it’s very frequent, even as they’re still in the enemies stage. Which honestly might objectively be fine and just uncomfortable for me as an ace person. I read lots of spicy books, but I’m always uncomfortable when the ogling isn’t… consented to, I guess. Like, Noelle wakes up one morning and does yoga in the living room, and Lennox basically is silent on purpose so she can watch Noelle do yoga because it’s hot. Noelle realizes and is kind of flustered about it , but to me that feels like a violation. In a similar vein, while still in the enemies phase, they both get off to thoughts of the other. I know lots of books do this, and sometimes it doesn’t bother me, but it did in this book — maybe because Lennox is being so mean.
