Ellie Engle Saves Herself by Leah Johnson

This is such a fab middle grade read! 👏🏼 it has queer rep, friendships, first crushes, school life problems and of course, superpowers!

I am obviously not the target age range for this book, but I still found it so enjoyable and can really see the children it’s aimed for absolutely loving it! I’m not really a superhero person, but I actually loved that side of it in this story, so I know that superhero fans will love it. Not only is it a fun superhero kinda story, it is such a heartwarming read about moving up in school, meeting new people, friendship groups changing and how that can effect us.

There’s a huge lesson that you take away from reading this, that you can be your own hero, that you shouldn’t have to fear or feel shame for simply existing as who you truly are. And isn’t that a lesson we want all children to learn? Well done Leah Johnson for getting that message across in such a fun and accessible way to kids 💜
