Gold Boy, Emerald Girl by Yiyun Li

As you might expect to happen when reading a collection of short stories, certain ones resonate with me more than others but I greatly enjoyed all of them. I've got a terrible grasp on history, especially Chinese history, and that was easily the most intimidating part while I was reading some of the stories. I felt I needed to know more of historical context of Mao-era China or more understanding of cultural intricacies per generation or the like. However, since I hadn't read short stories in a long time, I forgot there's really no need for such a comprehensive understanding I'm just getting a glimpse into these worlds. Li gives all the background needed. Overall, I found each story and its characters to be wonderfully complex, nuanced, poignant pieces making Li's exploration of the human condition readily relatable.
