Shannon and Johnny were likable enough characters once you gave them the time of day and sat and thought about where each character was coming from and how their decisions affected their lives. I think all the characters and the plot were written well. But… Shannon was very clueless about a lot of things. I loved Johnny’s “call to action” to want to protect Shannon from the first time they met each other. I mean what truly screams romance other than your future boyfriend hitting you upside the head with a rugby ball.
Him dedicating “She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5 to Shannon was when I full blown cried my eyes out at this book. The humor and the banter from all the characters was refreshing, I love a good friend group where everyone brings something to the table. To be honest though – both Shannon and Johnny’s characters got on my nerves for maybe 35% of this. The inner dialogue with the amount of repetition probably was the reason especially because like Shannon I myself is considered "small" for my age where people in public really confuse me for being much younger. Reading about being small in books is one thing but having the author continue to bring it up is very annoying…I know that Shannon’s father was God awful but her mother was just as bad with the way she freaking acted. I could write a whole essay about how much I hated her. How could a mother seriously act that way towards the children she birthed?
Side note:
Gibsie and Claire are and will forever be my two favorite characters from this series so far. Their connection and banter is just so enjoyable and I can’t wait to read their book because they are my babies! But back to my review…
All in all I have a really low attention span so I like to read books that are more fast paced or at least can keep my attention. This book was the complete opposite and I found myself putting this down to give myself some much needed time away. I previously tried to read this in September of last year on my own and got half way through and stopped because of the amount of repetition and the sheer slow paceness of the book but – here we are. I decided to start from the beginning because I only remembered half of the plot from where I left off but I wanna give a big thank you to parts 1 and 2 of the audiobook. I followed along with the audiobook and my physical book because without it I would again have put this book down.
“If this is love, then it’s you. – You are love.”

“I love you, Shannon like the River.”
