And Quiet Flows the Don by Mikhail Sholokhov

And Quiet Flows the Don / Тихий Дон
Mikhail Sholokov
.
Definitely a heavy one. For those of you looking for uplifting quarantine reads, this is NOT it, but I am glad to have read it. There is much talk about this book. It won Sholokov the Nobel, some compare it to War and Peace, some contest the authorship, but however one may feel, it’s pretty epic (as the kids say).
.
It describes the life of the Don Cossacks during peacetime and then during WWI and the Russian Revolution and Civil War. The author gives windows into the worlds of his characters, and rather than focusing on a particular “main character,” opts for more of a quilt-like approach, introducing fragments that give rise to a view of the whole.
.
There is much discussion of the competing ideologies of the time, and the people whose lives are shaped by them. It’s a compelling, sad, and quite violent read. There a certain lack of sentimentality with which the story is told. Unlike many novels, the author is more interested giving the facts of the story and letting the reader gather their own impressions, rather than wading into the territory of the more emotional realm. Really glad to have finally experienced this one.
