Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling

5.0

Oh my God. I *loved* this book. I seriously want to be Mindy Kaling's new BFF. Is that possible?

This book was basically a collection of essays of Mindy's (and lots of lists! For a girl who loves lists, this endeared me to her immediately). The beginning was a bit slow for me, but it definitely picked up as I got used to Mindy's writing style.

I can't pick a favorite section. Between her thoughts on one-night stands (OMG I COMPLETELY AGREE!) to her rant on married people to the types of romantic comedy women stereotypes to her time at Saturday Night Live, I loved it all.

I've heard some talk about how Mindy talking about her weight turned people off. My thoughts are different, because I have (and still am!) where she is at. I have struggled with my weight for all my life and I can COMPLETELY understand where she is coming from. Plus, she works in a world I want no part of: Hollywood where looks are everything. In everything she said, I felt myself nodding and agreeing. If you haven't been in that situation of being slightly chubby but not totally overweight, I don't think you can identify with her. For me, I found comfort in her words. It's hard and thought it was a perfect addition to the book. I think it was awesome how honest and forthright she was about her struggles with accepting it. Not a lot of celebrities are.

In any event, thoroughly enjoyed this novel and will definitely be a re-read!

If I compare it to Bossypants, it's hard. I didn't enjoy Bossypants as much as most people did. I got a few chuckles out of that book but I've never been a *huge* Tina Fey fan. (And I don't find 30 Rock the least bit funny...) For this book, it wasn't about being laugh out loud funny. I think I expected that at the beginning but quickly learned it wasn't Mindy's style. I've also been a huge fan of The Office (well, not this season! The Office isn't the same without Michael...) and Kelly Kapoor is one of my idols. She is completely, 100% awesome. In the end, while Bossypants let me appreciate the empire Tina Fey has built (and believe me, I have SO much respect for her!), Is Everyone Hanging Out without Me? gave me a book I could identify and agree with and learn from.
