Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff

Yes! What an epic conclusion to what has been one of the bloodiest, gruesome, and exciting fantasy series I've read in a while! I thoroughly enjoyed this story, start to finish!

My absolute favorite part of this series were the characters. This is by no means a character driven story, but every character was created with so much depth, went through their own unique growth and progression, and came to a final conclusion that both felt satisfying, consistent, and real. Mia remains morally grey throughout the entire series and I appreciated that SO MUCH! So many authors believe that for a brutal character to grow they need to become softer, and though Mia grows, Kristoff does not sacrifice her sharp edges and ferocity. Every character is not perfect, nor wants to be.

I thought the plot really picked up in this final book. We got pirates in this one!! And a pirate king!! The plot also finally got bigger! I was a little disappointed that the second book continued on Mia's orginal goal, but this book finally made the plot to have much more impact on the whole world. I really loved the ending and how things came together. I loved the meta elements that were introduced to the story, it made the book all the more unique and intriguing.

I loved the use of a narrator in the story (and even the footnotes). It was such a fun way to read and made the ending make me feel much more sentimental. The ending started to feel like a George R. Martin story with how freely Kristoff killed his characters we had grown to love. Overall, I really enjoyed this book it's exactly the conclusion this series needed.
