"You could be born into a family, but you still had to choose them."
The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina was a love letter to family that spans across generations. It was an offering to the ancestors and an acknowledgement of their gifts and magic. Zoraida Córdova poured her entire heart out onto the pages and immersed us in a magical world full of love, laughter, secrets and family bonds.
This book pulled me in and held me tightly. Orquídea won my heart over and moved me to tears at some points because of her heartbreaking past. She moved through life under a veil of silence and surrounded by a wall of secrets thinking this would keep her family safe. Tragedy after tragedy came knocking at her door but still she willed herself to the Earth and survived the only way she knew how, relying totally on herself and her natural gifts.
This story makes me reflect deeply on the concept of silence and how it can either be used as a shield or sword. But ultimately in families it does more harm than good. Zoraida shows us that family isn't a stagnant concept. Family is a living structure with deep roots that span generations and it is constantly evolving and growing. Family is also not only a biological connection but built on a foundation of love and trust that must me planted and watered daily. Family is not only a blood relation but an act of will that requires us to open our hearts to choose one another. Family is essentially an unseen force, an unbreakable bond and the thing that keeps us going when life looks hopeless.
This magical tale reminded me that I am always tied to my loved ones who passed. There is always an inheritance left to us by our ancestors that is greater than possessions left behind. If we dig deep in our bones and tap into our memories we are able to access the magical gifts that are passed down through the ages.
This book was beautiful not only in prose but in the world building. I've never been to Ecuador but this book made it feel like home and gave me so much Latinx flavor. It makes me long for a hug from my abuelitas and for the tastes and smells of home. This book was an absolute gift & a joy to read. @zoraidasolo truly outdid herself.
