I'm not sure I understand the hold that this novel had on the world upon its release. Yes, it absolutely tackles difficult and important issues relating to race and discrimination, but none of the characters speak like real people. Whether the characters are black or white, none of them sound like they live in the real world. I found it near impossible to get fully lost in this book because the dialogue always struck the wrong chord.
