The Butterfly Lampshade by Aimee Bender
5.0
Holy god. This book is tremendous and delicate and intelligent and sad and oh so perfect. Aimee Bender is everything I’ve ever wanted to be as a writer and this book, like “An Invisible Sign of my Own,” has wrecked my little heart. It navigates the topics of dislocation, trauma, and mental illness with such care. There is such a poignant and sharp balance between the emotional wholeness and agency that Bender gives the child Francie and also the overwhelming sense of Francie’s dependency, distrust, and lost-ness.
