Gorilla and the Bird: A Memoir of Madness and a Mother's Love by Zack McDermott

5.0

"The solution to mania is so simple yet so hard to come by. Just sleep"
What a beautiful story about a mother-son bond and the depths of love as Zack battles mania and bipolar disorder. This story is so raw yet beautiful. I thought I knew what bipolar disorder was but this brilliant memoir depicted the reality of this illness. The author is so insightful and. as a public defender longs to help those less fortunate who are also just like him in so many ways. This is a story of love, family and mental illness. It is a story that shows how mental illness affects everyone and how those affected teeter on the brink trying to hold on to their sanity. The author is candid, transparent and hides no details. My heart ached and I cried not just for the author but for the people whose cases he represented and for all those in psychiatric facilities. I had the pleasure of meeting Zack at Hachette's Book Brunch and he was so humble as he talked about his journey and process writing this book. This is the kind of story that everyone needs to read. It quickly snaps you back into humanity.
