This book was my first experience of literary despair - the genuine anguish of a beloved character dying . Actual sobbing then and now.
If you ask me (and not my therapist) about my childhood trauma, this book is TOP of the list. I'm not sure I could have finished it again if I wasn't tandem listening and reading for those last 100 pages.
And also my obsession with whatever trope Nathaniel is has been a defining moment of my literary taste.

Graphic: Body horror, Death, Violence, Blood, and Classism
Moderate: Police brutality and Injury/Injury detail
