When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker
5.0
Rating: 6 Stars
Tropes: Only One Dragon, Star-Crossed Lovers, Forbidden Love, Angst, Unique World-Building, Multiple POV, Strong Independent MC’s, slow-burn, He Falls First
I’m calling it, this book is shaping up to be my ultimate read of the year. ‘When the Moon Hatched’ has already secured a spot on my all-time favourite shelf and I’m already fighting the urge to re-read it. It truly captures the essence of an epic, action-packed, romantic fantasy novel.
I want to start first with the exceptional world-building that captivated me from the very first page. The richness and uniqueness of the world, from magical lore to diverse dragon species, were unlike anything I've encountered before. Every detail about this world, including the language crafted by Sarah A. Parkers, left me in awe. The glossary at the end was a treasure trove! If you’ve yet to read this, please make use of this hidden gem. Despite the extensive world-building, the pacing of the book (even with around 600 pages), was spot-on for the epic and romantic fantasy genre.
I was forewarned about the emotional rollercoaster I may or may not experience, but nothing could prepare me for the depth of pain and empathy I felt for the characters. Raeve, our main character, stood out as one of the most compelling protagonists I've ever encountered. Her strength, power, humour, and intrigue added layers to her character that both broke my heart and uplifted me. Her growth and resilience in the face of extreme trauma, loss and pain, is extremely moving. Now, let's talk about Kaan. This man's unwavering love and support for Raeve, while respecting her independence, melted my cold, black heart. The heartfelt dialogues and interactions between them encapsulated true love perfectly. Their relationship dynamics kept me on the edge of my seat, craving more and more.
I'm already itching to dive back into this book. Despite guessing a major secret revealed towards the end, the flawless storytelling and anticipation for the upcoming trilogy has left me eager for more.
