The Widow's Guide to Dead Bastards by Jessica Waite

3.0

I really thought this is a work of fiction until I saw the small “a memoir” note when I’m 100 pages in already.

Thank you Atria Books for sending me an ARC in exchange for honest review.

The first thing that grabbed my attention is the title. Books with long and intriguing title tend to stick with me (TSHOEH, AGGGTM, ALATLTG) and now we have TWGTDB. I read the synopsis and I was like, okay this one is definitely interesting and I want to know more about the dead husband’s secrets which are only uncovered when he died.

But this is a memoir, I am expecting a concrete sequence of events that narrates the promised gist yet this one was a bit confusing for my taste.

Majority of the events happened after the funeral and there are some backstories in between but that is not the main issue for me, what I found perplexing is the way these life events were distributed but no cohesive closure at all.

Yes, the author talked about her husband’s porn addiction, hidden debt, illicit affairs, and mental health issues but the discussion of each individual topics were scattered making it a bit all over the place.

On the other hand, I liked the way Jessica Waite talked about life after the death and how her relationship with her son, Dash, moved forward after that.

This is a promising memoir but it really was not wrapped well in terms of giving closure or a “then, what” to the revelations that she unraveled.

Solid title, 3stars!
