Lotharingia: A Personal History of Europe's Lost Country by Simon Winder

dark informative lighthearted reflective medium-paced

5.0

The best kind of history book, by turns funny, shocking and never ever dull. The final volume in a trilogy (the other two books, Danubia and Germania are also excellent) gives a history of the region of Lotharingia since it was formed after the death of Charlemagne and the Carolingian empire was divided up between his three sons, up until just after the Second World War.

Thoroughly and unreservedly recommended.
