2.5

I nearly DNF'd 15% in because the writing wasn't great and I wasn't feeling connected to any of the characters, but after putting it down for a few hours, came back and ended up reading the entire book in under 24 hours. So there's that.

That being said, I didn't love it. The writing itself felt fairly juvenile (a direct quote: "It was getting legit cold out, and while Ryan didn't have a super expensive fancy car like a lot of his teammates, he did have one with heated seats, which was enough for him."). Similarly, the characters (both main and side) weren't particularly strong; I don't really have a sense for either main character's personality or interests, outside of their relationship or their shared love of their dog.

The primary plot point in this book is miscommunication — or rather, a complete lack of communication that inevitably leads to misunderstandings. There was a lot of back and forth in their relationship, going from friends, to hooking up, to friends, to awkward, to hooking up, etc., all in 200 pages, which kind of gave me whiplash, and made it hard to remember what stage of the relationship they were currently in and why. They spend the majority of the book each thinking the other definitely doesn't have feelings for them, and while there are a few instances that I can sort of see how they got that impression, it does get old as the primary plot device. When they finally did officially get together, the communication was still lackluster, which was disappointing. I feel like these men desperately need to have a couple of honest, open conversations that go beyond simply saying "I love you".

I was in the mood for an easy, mindless read without much angst, and this fit that bill. I can't say I would recommend it to people, but I didn't hate reading it either. So do with that what you will haha.
