Very reminiscent of The Night Circus. Except The Night Circus is just a place to go and enjoy the sights and sounds. Caraval has a challenge.
A great opener for a series. I didn’t realize it was a series when I started it though. So at times it felt like too much information was missing and that they would info dump at the end. They didn’t of course because we will find out everything piecemeal over the course of the 4 books, I guess.
I liked Julian, I liked Scarlett, but am meh on Donatella. Perhaps I will grow to love her in the other books.
The ending was one twist after the other so that I had to listen to it again to be sure I actually understood what had happened. I don’t love when the ending is so clever that it doesn’t quite make sense. I prefer when at the end I’m like, “oh yes of course! How did I not see that?!” But considering that this end isn’t really the end, we will see.
