Masc by Marshall Thornton
4.0
(4.5*) Lionel and Dog have been in a relationship for about six months, but after taking an online quiz, Lionel believes their relationship is doomed. As he joins Dog's bowling team and discovers some hidden talents, Dog gets profiled in a work newsletter, whose editor is derisive towards femme gay men. A break-up, a night in jail, a morning of drag bingo, an afternoon of day drinking, and a month of staving off depression soon follow. Can Lionel and Dog go the distance?
I love Lionel and Dog so much. I would happily read any number of books about them, and I really enjoy the ridiculous humour of this series. There were some incredibly sweet moments mixed in with the messy antics, plus some distressing encounters with a work colleague and abusive absentee parent, which gave the sequel a slightly more serious tone. I felt Masc was less thematically focused than Femme, which is the only reason I rated it slightly lower.
cw: sexual assault; parental estrangement and references to past abuse
