Frost by C.N. Crawford

4.0

An adult fantasy Fae romance, enemies to lovers, with a slow burn and a dual pov. That’s how you could describe frost by C.N. Crawford.

This is my first plunge in the world of changeling romance, and dare I say, it was a good one!

“Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild With a faery, hand in hand, For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.”

Ava Jones, a lowborn fae abandoned in the human world by her parents, has the worst birthday ever. We get to meet her in the midst of her despair, after finding her boyfriend cheating on her in their apartment, and honestly, I would be a wreck if it happened to me too.

As she is drinking her worries away and ranting to her best friend Shalini in their favorite pub, we get a glimpse at the Seelie King Torin and the tournament he organised to help him find his new Seelie queen.

Apparantly humans spontaneously fall to their knees when being in the presence of a Seelie king, but Ava is no human, and she does not give a damn about this custom. She even starts of a rant, ridiculing the tournament, and even Torin himself, much to the liking is the TV crew following Torino’s every move.

As a low born Fae, who hasn’t been in het homework for, well, the entirety of her life, Ava per definition isn’t someone who could compete in the Seelie Queen Tournament. But when Torin offers her a hefty amount of money to compete in this tournament she accepts.

“Well, that’s good, darling, because as I said, I’m looking for someone I can’t love, and so far, you are the perfect match.”

The conditions being she has to win and sit on the throne for a few months, no love involved, because they both despise each other and that’s just the way Torin wants it. He has a secret after all.

The story was a bit predictable, but nevertheless a fun and quick read. Not too many steamy chapters, quite a lot of romance and some “legwarming” scenes, if you know what I mean.

The ending is bit of a cliffhanger, and I will surely be reading the second book Ambrosia.
