This was very unexpected! Atmospheric, eerie, and plotless, I came into this novel anticipating horror (like Our Wives Under the Sea) but left the book thinking it was more so a rich character study with some slightly unsettling undertones. This is a book about sisters and the way our parents screw us up and how we perpetuate those harms into adulthood. How we practice normalcy and every day rituals to ignore the ways in which we are allowing the world to crumble around us. This was pretty compelling cli-fi, the constant rain in all of its various forms led to interesting world building and also informed the atmosphere. The ending did not quite work for me, I liked that we knew something was going to occur (you know, cause of all the dread), but the final climax didn’t match that energy. I think the rest of the story could have connected to the end a bit better, or the ending could have been a bit longer. While this wasn’t the slam dunk of Our Wives, Julia Armfield has definitely established herself as a skilled writer and someone we should definitely be paying attention to!
Graphic: Domestic abuse, Toxic relationship, Grief, and Death of parent
Moderate: Eating disorder and Self harm
