Pao by Kerry Young
4.0
As I read more about the Chinese Diaspora, I learn about the many journeys they have made as they leave East Asia and try to make their way in the world. Jamaica is a country which I didn't know a lot about, especially the Chinese community whom has settled there.
"The people will never be free as long as long as they are colonised by a foreign power"
Pao is a Chinese immigrant in Jamaica, he arrived in 1938 as the Japanese began to invade China. In this new country, he is making his way in helping his Fathers friend Zhangs' "business", whilst trying to tread the fine line between assimulation and keeping his heritage community spirits up.
He becomes acquainted with Gloria, a local sex worker and begins to develop feelings for her. However, Pao marries Fay; a dual hertiage Chinese and Black Jamaican Woman who is deemed from a "respectable" family with power and status. Fay is also making her own way into the world.
Pao grows up with violence around him, and this is accepted by most. This has a profound impact on him as the landscape in Jamaica changes; society, politics, culture, drugs. The story weaves in historical events, and how the characters are all drawn in. Pao works hard to live up to Zhang's ambition and legacy, all the while navigating the tensions between his White, Black, Brown neighbours, saving face and being a beacon of support during the tumultuous time as Jamaica becomes independent.
I really enjoyed the wry narrative. Kerry Young has written three books surrounding the same events; this gives different characters perspectives. There are two more books written from the eyes of Gloria and then Fay.
Quotes which made me pause
"For it is the masses who will shake off the shackle of oppresion not individual men like you and me"
"When without a previous understanding, the enemy askes for a truce, he is plotting"
"Nowadays it's hard to see we are controlled by foreign powers because this new kind of imperialism come wrapped in a cloak that look like help"
