This didn't excite me as much as The Shining, but it was still a damn fine read. It had those qualities of realism that books so frequently lack, but King manages to bring to the table despite ghosts, vampires, serial-killing clowns from space, or whatever else he throws at you. My favorite thing is

that Danny didn't live happily ever after following the events at the Overlook. He was fucked up by it. He was fucked up by addiction that ran in his family. He did awful things but was still good because he's a human being.

King does that better than anyone.
