I said I wasn't going to read the next book in this series, but then it was available at the library and I was sick this week so I figured why not.
Was it worth it? Even in my comatose, sickly state? Not really.
Was I just having massive FOMO and really curious to see how the story would go? Yeah kind of.
I'll say that this one was SLIGHTLY better than Iron Flame. (IF was a hot mess, there's no changing my mind) It still wasn't great though. Yarros once again wrote a lot of words and had very little happening. Our group went from place to place, essentially doing the same thing at each one. It was very drawn out. It wasn't until the halfway point, or a little over, that we really started to get somewhere in the story and at 500 pages, that just too long.
The ending was no surprise. I think we all knew that was coming, no matter what you're feelings are about the series. It wasn't going to go any other way. That would have just been too anti-climactic.
I think one of the biggest issues I have with this series is that the story is being TOLD to us instead of SHOWN to us. So much of this story is just information dumping at the reader instead of letting the reader come to their own conclusions.
On the upside, Yarros has said she's going to take some time off between this and the next book. She put the first three in this series out in very fast secession and it shows. More care needed to be taken between books. Another round of editing, a breather to sit with her story and really hash out the fine details. Hopefully the next book will see a lot of improvements.
Will I continue the series? If I happen to see it at the library again, maybe. I will not be purchasing a copy for myself.
I actually had first edition copies of FW/IF and donated both of them so someone else could love them more than I was. I know someone out there lost their mind seeing first editions of those books out there before the launch of OS. I hope that person is enjoying them.
They named the goddamn cat, Broccoli? Please be for real.
