A clever, heartwarming, and surprisingly touching sci-fi series! We follow a self-aware SecUnit (part robot, part human) that hacks its own governor module to gain independence. What starts as just wanting to be left alone to consume media turns into an exploration of friendship, identity, and forging unexpected bonds.
Across the 7 books (6 novellas/shorts and 1 full novel), Murderbot's snarky inner monologue and hilariously reluctant character growth as it connects with caring humans and AIs is an absolute delight. There's also no shortage of action, adventure, and space exploration.
Kevin R. Free's narration is simply stellar, bringing Murderbot's distinctive voice to life. While Network Effect dragged a bit compared to the brisker novellas, the series overall is incredibly unique and thought-provoking.
For sci-fi fans looking for a quirky, character-driven series with heart - look no further! Murderbot is the delightfully cantankerous android you never knew you needed in your life. An original and touching 4-star must-read.
