So based on the blurb and my lacking memory, I assumed this was going to be centralised more so on the friendship than I felt it did. But overall, I feel like Dessen did well at looking at lots of big themes - drifting from parental relationships as a teen, first loves, first loves with a “bad boy”, falling pregnant at 16. But I found aspects jarring, which is likely because this book was published originally in 2005 and attitudes have changed in some ways. Halley’s mum being a therapist, her opinions that would’ve been popular in 2005 were most jarring. It’s interesting to see how strongly contemporary books age over time.
