Utterly adorable. This book was utterly adorable. From the very beginning, I was enthralled with the characters. These are sunshiney people. Charlie and Sage are bright and charismatic people that others orbit around. That's what sunshine means. Not just loud and happy.
I liked that the musical theater twin was the popular one over the athlete. Jocks can be shy too and Nick definitely was. I wish we saw a little more of him because there were some points where I wanted to know what he was thinking but at its core, this book was about Charlie and Sage so I'm okay that Nick's motivations were somewhat hidden.
The plot was so tight in how Charlie and Sage's relationships were inverses of each other.Sage and Nick end things right when Charlie and Luke begin dating. Then they get back together when Luke breaks up with Charlie. Always drama happening just the way I like it.
I liked that putting Sage in the middle wasn't a straight "she chooses Charlie's feelings over Nick" even though it could be boiled down to that. Sage was the bestest friend. Full stop. She knew Charlie was gay without ever having to be told. She knew that Charlie and Luke had crushes on each other. She knew that Charlie coming out to Nick would solve all her problems and they could be together but she never even once hinted to Charlie that he should do that. She just kept reassuring him that everyone would still love him and he should tell people on his own timeline. While she was dying from heartbreak inside. The song True Friend by Hannah Montana is about her.
I fee like in most books Charlie would be written in an insufferable way. Here's a guy who has everything. Star of the school, amazing at sports, theater, academics, gets all the girls. He was self-absorbed but I never hated him. I wanted to scream at him to stop stringing Luke along or just give his brother or his best friend his blessing to date each other but he was so wrapped up in being in the closet that he couldn't see beyond himself. And I was okay with it. The plot only worked if he was doing that. This wouldn't be a story if everyone communicated perfectly.
