Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree

Okay, Travis did it again. I devoured and adored this cozy fantasy just like I did Legends & Lattes. At this point, I will read anything written by this man, and I definitely consider him the king of cozy fantasy.

Once more, I absolutely adored all the characters. You really cannot help it, because they are all funny, sweet, and simply precious. Fern was by far my favorite and certainly a far cry from our other rattkin friend from L&L — complete with a very colorful vocabulary. I also loved Satchel. Every character was perfect in their own way.

I rated this one a little lower than L&L only because it took me a little longer to really get into it. BUT once I did, I couldn’t put it down. I could seriously read 200 more pages about this cozy bookshop. I didn’t want to leave it. Bookshops & Bonedust and Legends & Lattes have established themselves as two of my comfort reads, undoubtedly. And I hope to see more incredible cozy fantasies from Travis in the future!

Quotes

“You know, there’s a lot of people out there. Lot of noise. I love what I do, love it every day, but none of us sees more than a tiny piece of all the world, like we’re lookin’ out a little-bitty window. And I saw you through mine, and somethin’ inside me said ‘That’s somebody you oughta know.’ Simple as that.”
____

“But in another way, it’s the best it’s ever been. It’s been better for me. Having you here is connecting me to why I do this. To why I used to love it. I don’t know if I can explain it, but watching you read what I give you, putting a book in your hands and seeing what happens to you once you put it back down… I can’t make you understand how that gives me something I didn’t know I had to have.”
____

“Gin. Smells like winter. Tastes like summer.”
____

“I guess… I guess I’d miss the moment. That instant when you know someone sees that same thing you see.”
“When they see you. When you know that at least right then, you’re really not alone. Somebody else feels exactly what you do. Or you hope so, anyway.”

____

“Every book is a little mirror, and sometimes you look into it and see someone else looking back.”
____

“Still. I have the memories from the times before… this. And yet, I know the heat of a hearth fire, even though I cannot feel it. Today was like that. Knowing the feel of a thing, without being able to experience it.”
