Anne of the Island by L.M. Montgomery
3.0
I enjoyed this more than the second book, but Anne's ignorance of her feelings for Gilbert felt a bit extreme. (I like the general setting, but two years of dating another man who we barely get to know seems a bit extreme, especially when Anne is essentially leading him on.) For Gilbert being the romantic interest, his scenes also seemed extremely under-developed to the point where he actually disappeared for large sections. As it is, he feels more like a prop than a person (his illness being the tipping point). Hopefully he'll play a bigger role in the books from this point on.
I really enjoyed the small-town/city dynamic that begins to come into play and how Anne both appreciates her home while growing farther away from it.
My family always claims that "eight is the worst age" and looking at Davy in this book, I get why they said that. XD I appreciate his curiosity and hope that he grows on me in future volumes, but his willful enjoyment of others' pain make his redeemable qualities harder to acknowledge.
