The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller
5.0
This book has everything I crave in a romance and I am shamelessly obsessing over it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
It got me back into reading, after a years-long reading slump.
I’ve seen the mixed reviews and I know this book had imperfections, but in fact, it doesn’t deter my joy while reading it. It brought me so much joy that I’m willing to overlook its flaws.
I've lost count at how many times made me snicker and giggle in the middle of the night.
It gave me the MC I wanted, the clever romantic banters I wanted.
The mysterious but sweet love interest I wanted.
And it's a real page-turner! Not a hint of boredom!
If it weren’t for my sleeping schedules, I would’ve finished this in one go.
Our MC Alessandra is a breath of fresh air from all the good girl-coded MC.
She never tries to be a good girl, she admitted to herself she was bad from the start.
She’s fully aware that she was beautiful, and used it to her advantage. (Unlike some MC with a Kardashian’s body trying to fool the audience by their so-called insecurities to make them "relatable".) No, a woman with an actual brain is more relatable to me.
And for once, an MC who actually flirts back!
I also love that her hobby is fashion and sewing. A woman doesn’t need a traditionally masculine hobby to be empowered.
And Kallias, oh my god, I just wished he had even more screen-time!
I just think that his physical descriptions made him a bit older than he was at nineteen! I thought at least he was 21 at least.
And how did he survive those meetings? Having to work such a serious job at nineteen sucks! Have a little fun, Kallias!
He does have so much depth as a love interest, but my issue with him is just how he rules. If he’s progressive enough to think of women’s rights I think he should mind the peasants’ rights as well, make them support him!
The only cons I do mind is that it’s not longer and not part of a series.
(There is a spinoff about the MC’s sister, but I don’t want her. I want Alessandra and Kallias!)
It doesn’t try to over-complicate itself with magic, as a standalone. I think there are enough explanations of the magic that goes on within the plot. Each chapters is dynamic and propels us to go more.
I didn’t see the plot twist, however. But wow!
The ending is ‘short’, but the previous chapters had given me enough hints to imagine what happens after. So, I don’t mind.
A re-read is definitely guaranteed. It’ll be my comfort read for sure.
