This is another love story that isn’t a love story. We see the two main characters throughout their lives. Their time together, their time apart, and then getting back together frames the story but the story is about the individuals.
There’s the immigration story. How hard it was for both Ifemelu and for Obinze and what they both had to do. How it worked for Ifemelu but drove her away from Obinze. How it didn’t work for Obinze and how his life changed.
This book was like a slice of life book except it wasn’t a slice, it was a chunk. And it was so well written and engaging. Even though the audiobook is 17 hours long, when it finished I thought, “wait that’s it?” I could’ve continued to hear about their lives much longer.
