Broken by Andi Jaxon

4.0

This is another emotional story from Andi Jaxon and although I should be used to it, it always gets to me.

Eli and Asher were each other's first love when they were both very young. Their relationship starts when Eli was only 16 and Asher was 19, but they keep it a secret for a year, especially from Marcus, Eli's older brother and Asher's best friend. But then, a tragic accident takes Marcus' life and Asher, out of guilt he feels, leaves behind a broken Eli with nothing more than a "I'm sorry" via text. Years pass without them seeing each other again, although Asher sends Eli messages on special dates, messages that are ignored by an Eli plunged into a deep depression and in a self-destructive spiral for feeling abandoned, unwanted and unloved by everyone.

But a meeting, orchestrated by Asher and without Eli knowing that they are going to see each other that ends in a disaster, and a scandalous video of Eli that goes viral, send them both to the same resort and therefore, they meet again.

Despite the obvious chemistry between them, and the emotional connection that, even after their long separation, never disappeared, Eli is angry with Asher and with good reason, which adds to his depression, and keeps trying to run away from him. Not only that but he also knows that if their relationship comes to light, it could destroy his career, so Eli tries to protect him too, pushing him away, but Asher realizes that what they have is more important than everything that separated them and fights to win him back, even if it means losing his NFL career, something he had protected up until now.

The story is angsty, and it has several triggers, so I suggest you read them before reading the book, and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because although I would like nothing more than to believe that love heals everything, realistically not possible. Does it help ? Yes. Is it enough? No, I dont think so. And although I know it's fiction, I think that talking about therapy in these stories serves to encourage those of us who read and suffer from different types of mental health issues to feel encouraged to seek it.

Their HEA is hard earned, and it's a joy to finally see them find the peace they needed to be together.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
