Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe

5.0

This is an extremely accessible yet personal approach to an often confusing and misunderstood (including to those who are part of that group) aspect of human existence. The minimalist art style, humorous and intentional dialogue, and breaking down of complex histories and emotions through a coming-of-age narrative are the kinds of thinks that make a great memoir. In those aspects, Gender Queer reminds of other foundational graphic memoirs, such as Persepolis or Fun Home (the sometimes excessive wordiness of Fun Home aside). At times Gender Queer felt a little disorganized, but never hard to follow, different episodes in Kobabe’s life come as they are relevant, and never feel unwelcome. A definitive must read for anyone feeing out of place in their own bodies or anyone seeking to know more about the variety of human life.
