Bacchylides: Complete Works by Bacchylides

3.0

3.5 (close to 4) Bacchylides was an ancient Greek poet born in Ioulis, a town of Ceos. We don't really know when he was born, but scholars estimate that probably he was born between 512 B.C and 505 B.C because it is said to have been younger than the poet Pindar who was born probably in 518 B.C.

The Odes of Victory and the Dithyrambs of Bacchylides were enjoyable. I liked the Dithyrambs even more and my favorite was "Theseus."

The Fragments are in ancient Greek along with some good information about them in English. I skipped some of the fragments and notices and read only the ones that had information that seemed interesting to me. Also, because I read this on my kindle, the fond on the info of the fragments is way too small and even when I enlarged, it is not too easy to read them. I'd much prefer to read this section on a physical copy.

Ancient Greek poetry (in translation) doesn't read like the poetry we know today, so it can be challenging and can get tiring at times; nevertheless, it is enjoyable and much easier if read (at least for me) slow and with breaks between each poem, which really is not different than how I would suggest reading modern poetry too. More over, the best tip I can give that helps me a lot is to first read and take note of any mythological or real names mentioned and you might not know. Then, it's best to read each poem out-loud. It does make a difference, and you'll notice how wonderful the storytelling it is.
