Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
3.0
I read this book a few days ago and left a raving review. Here it is:
“I started this book one night and wasn’t super interested at first so I kinda procrastinated reading it for a few days. I then picked it up and finished the rest (320 pages) in one day. I just didn’t want to put it down. I LOVE Jacks. I mean, can you really ask for more than a morally grey, ‘devastatingly handsome’ love interest with a tortured soul? I don’t think so. Although, I wish we got Jacks’s POV and I think it took me longer to connect with the characters at first because the book is in third person POV. Anyway, I’ve decided on 4.5 stars for now but I think the other two books in the series will only get better as the plot and romance evolves.”
Needless to say those are not still my thoughts. Well, they are, because I stand by everything I said there but I have some things to add now that I am not writing this review while on an “I just finished a book” adrenaline-high and am able to think a bit more clearly. So, let’s really be honest here: this book was a hot mess. It felt like the author couldn’t have a coherent thought and made up the plot as she wrote. In fact, I’m not even really sure what the plot of this book is because the original description was completely forgotten and has been replaced by cursed princes, prophecies, and neck-biting vampires. That’s certainly not what I remember being described in the blurb on the back of the book. Even besides that, though, none of the plot twists that were constantly appearing were ever really resolved before another one got randomly thrown in. Anyway, I have to change my rating for these reasons. Is the book entertaining? Yes. Is it a writing masterpiece? No.
