Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

5.0

WOW. Here's a book that certainly lives up to its hype, and I am so glad I finally read it! If you are a fan of the thriller/suspense genre (or even if you aren't!), read this book and buckle up for a twisting, fast-paced mental roller coaster of a story.

Nick Dunne and Amy Dunne are approaching their five-year anniversary, and their marriage is on shaky ground. On the morning of the anniversary, Amy vanishes, and Nick becomes the prime suspect. The days march on, and the evidence pointing to Nick keeps piling up, but things seem not quite right. The reader begins to wonder…is Nick really the man behind the crime?

Gillian Flynn completely floored me with this book. It is full of too many plot twists to count, forcing you as the reader to be constantly on your 'mental toes,' searching for the truth in every page. This is one of the only books I've read where I really did not care for both main characters, but still wanted to read on until the bitter end. I certainly had several late nights reading Gone Girl--unputdownable is a word to use for sure! Sure, some readers may end up feeling manipulated by Flynn's plot devices, but I think that's part of the fun of a book like this. Flynn does a masterful job of capturing the totally distinct voices of both Amy and Nick, as the story unfolds from their dual perspectives. I finished the book yesterday, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since--analyzing every twist and turn in my mind. This book was unlike anything I've ever read, which is part of why I liked it so much, even if it was gritty, dark, and certainly unsettling.
