The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper
2.0
I’m afraid I just found this story slightly flat. I really wanted to like ‘The Dark is Rising’ I’d heard so many good things about it, but I just couldn’t connect with it.
I agree that Susan Cooper’s writing is almost poetic, there are some sentences that are a pleasure to read. I felt there was a lack of story and character development. I didn’t care about any of the characters, I didn’t know them well enough to care. I felt that Merriman is supposed to bring some form of relief when ever he comes into the story, but I had nothing.
I’m not really too sure what was supposed to be going on, ‘The Dark’ was just too vague, the bad guys where in no way threatening or scary, granted I am 30 but I do easily scare! Will just knows everything too, automatically and by reading a book, so there is no great adventure that you are going on with Will here, and he seems to get out of trouble through luck or intervention of someone else, and he is supposed to be this ancient all powerful being.
I think a bit more detail added to characters and the plot and this would be an amazing world and adventure, but it doesn’t have any of that. That makes me feel like I can see why this has been over taken by other tales.
