Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata
4.0
Convenience Store Woman is my second book for Women in Translation Month and a book that has been on my priority tbr for a long time. I’m glad to say I really liked it! I don’t have too much to say about it. I have seen a lot of people discuss Kieko being autistically coded, and I definitely think that is a worthwhile discussion. She definitely shows signs of either autism or ASPD or both, but also, I don’t think an explicit diagnosis is necessary for this novel to work. I actually think the way Kieko was written worked really well. Her being obviously disabled, though through what diagnosis we don’t know, aids the message of this forced conformity hurting everyone, though it definitely hits disabled people the hardest.
My only real complaint towards this book is that I wish it held your hand less. The message was very clear the entire way through and it didn’t need to be spelled out on top of that, but overall I still really enjoyed it.
