5 ⭐ CW: fantasy violence, sexual harassment
Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree is the cosiest warmest, sweetest book I've ever read! This was definitely a nice departure from all the dark fantasy and complex scifi. The tagline, "High fantasy, low stakes," is spot on for a book about a reformed Orc Barbarian ruining a coffee shop, selling baked goods, and having a slow burn sapphic romance.
We follow Viv, an Orc who is trying to get out of the business of bloodshed and into the business of selling coffee. Along the way she picks up allies that turned into friends until there is a cute little found family. Most of the conflict is so light that it can be solved with cinnamon buns (they solve akll my problems too). All of the characters are charming and lovable in their own ways. We even get a giant coffee shop cat!
The major theme from this book is about knowing that things don't have to stay as what they started out as, meaning you always have the option to change who you want to be. The slow burn romance was very cute. I found myself grinning like an idiot far too often while reading this.
I would read another light fantasy like this and wouldn't mind if we got more tales about Viv, Tandri, Cal, and Thimble.
