Unexpectedly maybe one of my favorite books I’ve read so far this year! Funny, confident, reflective, this book had such a distinctive voice and style (I’m a sucker for interesting use of POVs, switching between 1st and 3rd person was so cool), I had a great time! Usually I’m not one to say that the format of a book matters, but in this case I think listening to Elle Fanning’s audiobook narration took this experience to the next level. Margo was imbued with such care, the way Elle infused emotion into the dialogue almost made me feel like I was in the room with Margo. I LOVED everything this story had to say about motherhood (especially single, young, and poor motherhood), about addiction, about forgiveness (and unforgiveness), about sex work, and about how loving and taking care of a child can look very different from household to household. All of these pieces worked together well!
