Modern Quilt Perspectives: 12 Patterns for Meaningful Quilts by Thomas Knauer

5.0

I almost didn't read this one when I saw "12 patterns" in the title. Somehow I had missed "Meaningful quilts." But luckily a friend had just bought it and lent it to me with encouragement to check it out. I'm glad I did.

Knauer wants to expand the definition of "modern quilt" beyond a list of features to quilts dealing with contemporary meaning. I thoroughly enjoyed his themes and puns and designs for today. One example. A quilt in honor of new legislation allowing gay marriage was designed in rainbow colors, then quilted in the traditional double wedding ring pattern. I would like to be able to create like that. Once I did, actually with "Hole in the Safety Net." Maybe having read Knauer's book will prompt some more along that line.
