The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett
5.0
This is a very unique take on the murder mystery genre and my cup is half full over the start of this series
A gripe when of mine when reading a murder mystery is when the plot just consists of hopping from one dialogue section to the next, this was not the case. The plot driven story flowed consistently in this high fantasy setting and I had absolutely zero idea on what was coming next
There's depth to the world building which was a surprise considering the genre. The fantastical elements aided the unravelling of the murder and the leviathan looming in the background added even more mystery to this world which I hope we get to see more of in the future. The murder itself is also gruesome, if not bizarre, but grabs your attention instantly and as much as I didn't want to imagine it, I couldn't stop myself
Both characters in this detective duo were interesting to follow and they had a great relationship from seriousness to banter in the midst of all the policital corruption. The story follows the apprentices POV which was a great choice story wise as you never knew what was going through the eccentric investigators mind
The ending did not disappoint and after finishing it I can't decide what I enjoyed more, learning about this world or how the murder was solved
