Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (Updated Edition) by Anthony Bourdain
3.0
Lots of mixed thoughts on this one. Definitely a good read but I went for 3/5 as I think it goes too much for the ‘this is the gritty world of being a chef, isn’t it cool and don’t you want to be one’ rather than being a truly honest warts and all account. Heroine addiction, alcoholism, and machismo are casually mentioned as but rarely explored - as if they have had no impact on his career. The same goes for Anthony’s frequent praise but lack of elaboration when talking about his wife.
I would love to know more about these things but I can imagine he (or Bloomsbury) might have wanted to keep those parts of his life private or not write that kind of book - which is completely fair. Perhaps a more personal autobiography wouldn’t have found the same monumental success or propelled his career and changed his life the way that KC ended up doing.
