What a ride. I don’t know if I’ve read a story with a more unlikable lead. Very interesting to read a story narrated by a female sociopath. Parts of the story were funny or relatable but other parts made me feel queasy, especially as Irina loses her grip on reality. Lots of commentary on power dynamics, sexuality, and gender to digest here.
Selfishly, I’m left wanting more though. The ending felt a little too abrupt. I wanted some kind of comeuppance for Irina’s deranged behavior. Was the boy’s skull actually found? What happened after she fled the dinner with Uncle Stephen? What happens with her family? I also want to know what happened with Irina and Flo’s friendship - also, justice for Flo, she deserves a lot better than Irina!
Also, this book is so British (in a good way!). I had to use context clues or Google to figure out some of the phrases. I really want to go to a Tesco now to experience it.
4/5 ☆
