Just like the last time I borrowed this from Libby, I listened to it twice before returning it back. I also enjoyed Ruby Dee’s narration in bringing several towns and communities to life.
Each time I listen to Their Eyes Were Watching God, I discover something new.
This is a beautiful story, and I like how it shows different types of prejudice whittling away at a person’s freedom. The picture that emerges is complex.
This picture can be missed as the bigger story is of Janie wanting to meet her one truelove.
I like how Zora Neale Hurston manages to say so much and guise it as a romantic tale, and it’s just wonderful, how Janie’s romantic ideals sets her on a path towards independence.
If you like stories that combine hope with comedy and tragedy then I’d say give this one a try.
