I haven't loved poetry this much since I read The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo.
This is a collection of poems about Fretter's experiences with race, faith, adoption, and blackness. Each one was so poignant and moving, once I started reading I couldn't stop. Fretter conveys his life and what he has been through with such rhythm and emotion. It felt so raw and real, like I was reading a friends diary that expose some of their most personal feelings
The author is a spoken word poet, and that comes through so much in how it reads. There is just such feeling in all of the poems. It's hard to find words to describe a collection of poems, I typically read fiction books so it's hard to encapsulate how incredible this was.
I highly recommend this for anyone looking for poetry!
The only complaint I have is the length, it was over too soon. I can't wait till he (hopefully) releases another one!
