Chess Story by Stefan Zweig

3.0

This 84 page novella was interesting, and captivating from start to finish. It's a brief exploration of the micro and macro effects of the rise of the Nazi party in 1930s Germany. It's almost too short, but partly that's because this was also a parting manifesto, suicide letter in some ways before the author killed himself in 1942 in exile. Riddled with chronic depression and a collapse of his own world, the protagonist of the story experiences something similar to reflect that. The real key for me was the descriptions of what it's like to be torn apart from the inside out as the your world is ripped from you at the hands of the unjust and evil.

There's a lot to think about here, and I will spend a lot of time pondering over this one. It'll be easy to re-read as it's very short.
