Black River Orchard by Chuck Wendig

'The idea was crazy, that this apple made you better.'

I like apples. I usually get the basic supermarket varieties that don't change me as a person in dark or dreadful ways. The very special variety in this story seems wonderful and miraculous at first, but it brings the horror to small town, Pennsylvania in increasingly wild ways. This is absorbing, darkly magical, and deliciously descriptive. Also, based on my increased apple consumption, good for my health!

'He needed these apples. They made him better. They made him better. They made him joyous.'
