A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

5.0

I read so many reviews about this book that claimed the characters were badly written and that the storyline needed a lot of work but I found this book 10 times better than A Court Of Thorns And Roses. I loved the transition of Feyre into a strong female lead. When the book strayed out you could see the PTSD triggers lingering in her words and I wonders myself why she let Tamlin controller like she did and why she didn't fight back-that's not the Feyre we came to know.

I had a bad feeling about Ianthe from the start andd was nearly screaming when the final reveal came about and we found out thhe extent of her betrayal. That and when Tamlin and Lucien walked into the Throne room. I went livid but had to smile at how wonderfully this story was written for me to feel such hatred for them.

I was so curious to have my questions from book 1 answered and boy did they! That whole thing with Rhys at the end of book 1 confused the hell out of me but the explication for his behaviour. MAN! I wasn't expecting that! I thought maybe, considering Feyre's bargain with him it would be another beauty and the beast scenario where she would fall in love wotg arhys instead (which is kind of what happened anyway) but "mates"? That was a shock. Even from book 1 I was rooting for Rhys over Tamlin and I finally got my wish with this book.

I loved how the relationship developed and how Feyre was able to have powers. The explinations were great and, though many people have criticised Sarah for doing several page-long monologues I enjoy them. The only one which felt a bit out of place war tge one about Rhys' mother. I do think that-even though it was common knowledge to Mor, Cassien, Az and Amren-Rhys would have felt that information was a bit personal and shared it one-to-one with Feyrr. And can I just say those sex scenes! Rhys you magnificent beast lol. The revelation of all he did for Feyre when he felt the bond and how he saved her andd actually fraught for her so much...I can't help but be in love with him, not only for his impressive wingspan ;)

I did find the endless description of clothes and furniture a little distracting and boring after a while. While she described features and attire wonderfully we don't need to know what everyone is wearing every time they change outfit. Sometimes the outfits did need a little more depth and I did enjoy some of the descriptions but a simple line explaining they now wore a green dress or now donned black leather trousers and an open collared shirt would have been enough in certain places.

I found it surprising how I would go from feeling protective and affectionate for Lucien and Tamlin (more Lucien than anything I always had a bad feeling about Tam) in book 1 to absolutely despising their guts in book 2, so that is some great writing imho.

I cried at chapter 67. Like seriously cried. My heart ached and I was screaming that Feyre was an idiot for offering to sever the bond between her and Rhys all for pretense. It was all too much and I couldn't cope until I read the last 2 chapters and sighed with relief. I haven't been on such an emotional roller-coaster with a book on so long and I cannot wait for book 3!
