This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno
4.0
What a successfully creepy, ass book.
With strong themes on grief and the first generation immigrant experience, specifically of the Mexican-American traumatic side... THIS THING BETWEEN US is an existential, dark, supernatural horror tale about the inescapable dread of living with a darkness deep inside. That darkness can come from a myriad of things, the metaphor works for any trauma brought on by the latine experience in America. The violence in our history and the twisted forms family can emerge in.
It's a lot of heavy stuff that's told with creepy prose.
There are sequences here that reminded me of the worst nightmares I've had since I was a kid, and kudos for that.
Super stoked for what may come next from Gus Moreno.
