Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence by Anna Lembke
1.0
This book is bad and you should feel bad. Ideologically bad: https://www.sluggish.xyz/p/the-myth-making-of-dopamine-nation?utm_medium=ios
Scientifically lacking.
Conservative conclusions and allusions.
Badly written.
Mentions briefly capitalism and consumption but zero references or conclusions on what could be done by governments healthcare or other institutions, only individuals (or sometimes clubs and churches, which should be stricter and more conservative and modest!!!)
I would feel absolutely nuts if I was her patient and read this and found her comparing opioid addiction to her compulsively reading fantasy smut.
Woof.
ETA the more I think about it the more irritated I am. Very little mention of talk therapy or counselling beyond her weird forced DOPAMINE acronym. What about people who use pleasurable things (internet, opioids, masturbation machines (lol)) in non-problematic ways? What about the guy who admitted his switch from cocaine to cold water therapy had also become addictive (overspending, consumed his time and thoughts, used it to avoid real life) - his comment that he’s switched addictions is included as an amusing aside rather than showing that maybe this guy has some other issues??
ETA2 how do you write a whole book about balancing pleasure and pain and not mention BDSM/kink at all???
